A real belly laugh at last. Guess who got the first laugh? Desiree's boyfriend! I got the second one though. Calum and I are enjoying our days. He's been really cuddly lately so I'm getting a lot of hugs. He's really starting to respond to us too. He likes it when I play with him and his stuffed animals - Murphy the turtle and Shelly the snail. Yup, we have some great stories about Murph, Shell and Calum. Mostly, the stories involve one of them sitting on his head or tickling his toes.
Don was away over the weekend - off for a stag party for my brother-in-law. Calum missed his dad. At night he would be reaching out his little hand looking for his heat source. I'm afraid he had to make do with his mommy. Luckily it was hot or I would have had a very fussy boy.

A nice day for shopping
Calum and I have decided that today is a nice day for shopping. It's going to be hot today so it might be a good day to be inside an air conditioned building. It will be too hot for a walk today so we will head to the mall after we finish our morning activities.
Don is off for his brother's stag party for a few days. Dakota will be staying at a friend's house tonight and has a basketball clinic tomorrow. Desiree and her boyfriend will be around tonight but have plans to do some videotaping on the weekend so it will be a nice quiet weekend for Calum and I. I'm going to look for some summer things for him - a small pool, a bucket, a pinwheel and some bubbles. Oh, I may also look for his wedding outfit while Don is away. I know the perfect place but Don doesn't want him in a suit or anything. We'll see. I'm sure if he did have one Don would think it's cute. I'll have to guess at the size though because we have about a month before the wedding.
No other news to report. Calum had me up early today and was a bit demanding this morning. Don thought it was funny because he was really kicking to get our attention. I got up and rocked him for about ten minutes and he was out for his first nap of the morning. Now he's in his swing waiting for me to give him a bath. I think I'll wait till we get back though so he can have a bit of a cool down later this afternoon.
Enjoy your weekend everyone.

Say Mama!
Okay, I tried. I've been trying to get him to make any sound resembling the word Mama for weeks. No luck. His first recognizable sound was something like "uncle". Last night, Des had him going with the word "ewww" and today Dakota and I were sure he said "blue" when we asked him what colour he wanted us to do his hair. Regardless of what words he is trying to say, Calum is really interested in having conversations with us these days. Boy, can that kid go on! He's going to be a little story teller like his dad.
Sad news for a mom - I had to clean out his drawers last week. I reorganized things and had to put away a bag full of the things he has outgrown. Already! My little boy is getting big too fast. On the plus side, he soon will be able to wear some of those other cool outfits I have for him.

Calum attends a concert
Calum has attended his first concert. Dakota was playing in her school concert this afternoon and Calum and I went down to watch. We got there a bit early and listened to the band warm up. Shortly afterwards, the kids filled the gym and it got pretty noisy. Calum did well, we lasted through the national anthem, a dance and Dakota's performance before he got pretty hungy and we decided to go. He was sucking on my shirt throughout the whole performance and was pretty quiet the whole time but I didn't want to push our luck. The only thing he seemed to dislike was the clapping - it was entirely too loud for him. However, he must have felt deprived of his milk because he has been nursing all afternoon and only now has gone down for a nap. I had to trick him a little by putting him in his swing to get him to go to sleep. He wakes up as soon as I put him down on the bed so it's the swing or a grumpy little guy.
I finally realized the date today. I have to go back to work in just over a week. Oh, I'm going to miss our care free days. I'm looking forward to getting back into things but wish I could do so with a certain little guy strapped to my back. It sure is fun spending time with him, even when you are more tired than you have ever been in your life. Today, Calum and I had fun playing silly little games. He is really starting to respond so we both have fun. He seems to like his stacking cups, a foam block, his turtle book and his panda book [with lots of nice colours]. We play with them endlessly because anything more at the moment seems like just a little too much.
Now that he's napping I'm going to take a quick look at my email. It's been awhile since I've read anything and a certain avid emailer [yes, Don] has filled my inbox with interesting bits and pieces.

Calum's Morning with Dad
Well, Calum has attended his first political meeting at the tender age of two months. Poor, poor boy. Reports indicate that he worked his charm around the room and is well on his way to a promising career. That is, of course, until the thought of milk and the absence of his mom distracted him. Don took Calum to a meeting on Friday morning while I was off writing an exam for an employee position that I'm not entirely sure I want. In any case, the written exam was for three hours and Calum had to go with Don all morning. He did well, mostly. At 12pm I received a text message from Don asking where I was and arrangements were quickly made for him and Calum to meet me at my office. It seems someone does not like his bottle. Ever since, I've had a hungry little boy that seems to want to eat and eat and eat. Friday night he made very sure he got his milk when he wanted it. This does not bode well for our transition next month.
In other news, Calum also had his first visit to a restaurant. Don and I had lunch with his parents yesterday and Calum was very well behaved [ie. he slept through it all]. I'm sorry to report that I still have to work on the eating with one hand thing and Calum had a few drips on his clothes and crumbs in his hair when we were done. Calum is also getting used to his baths. That is of course, because I now join him in the "big tub" and let him splash me all he wants. As long as I've got a good grip he really seems to like it now.
Opps, Calum and Don have just come downstairs to report that someone is hungry again. Don really gets nervous when Calum starts trying to suck on his clothes. I secretly think it is a little funny. Hope you all enjoy your long weekend. Look for new pictures next week.

Growing like a weed
Calum is growing like a weed. He should be, he eats almost non stop some days. We are doing well. He keeps me busy most days - what with the baths, the stories, the cuddles, the naps and the endless feedings and diaper changings. We are taking the occassional walk but Calum still doesn't like to be out for long. Some days we run errands at the mall and get all manner of complements from the people we meet. Calum usually gets a little treat while we are there so he doesn't mind the trips - as long as we are quick about it and we stop mid-shopping for feeding when necessary.
I'll be returning to work soon. Don is watching Calum in June which will be a big change for us all. I've tried getting him used to his bottle again but it's not easy. I expect he will adapt when he needs to but it's hard for us all. He does sleep through the night a bit more and only eats for about 15-20 minutes when we do get up so I generally feel well rested.
We are starting to look for a few sitters to have on-call for when we need them. I have something to do this Friday and had someone lined up to care for him but just couldn't do it. I'll be away for about 4 or 5 hours and I can't leave him with a sitter for so long on his first time away from me. Don and I have worked something else out but I'm going to have to get used to the idea of being away from him occassionally. But, luckily, we still have some time before we have to do that so I think I'll go back to cuddling him again. He is starting to "talk" back to us now - cooing and smiling. He especially likes to be told that he is the best little boy in the whole world.
Hope everyone is doing well. I'm behind on my email so if you are awaiting a reply it will come - it just takes time when you have a little one keeping you busy all day.

Happy Mother's Day
It's hard to believe that Calum is getting so big so quickly. Or maybe not, the kid does eat a whole lot. Sometimes it feels like we spend all of our time feeding him, sleeping and changing diapers. Oh, mustn't forget doing laundry too. That's a never ending task these days.
We had a good week last week but it was too quiet with the girls in Kamloops. Calum had his second appointment with the audiologist to get his hearing tested. I've decided that I hate the tests. It's very difficult to calibrate the machines to do the test and your baby has to be sleeping and very still if the results are to be accurate. While Calum is a good boy he is a bit of a wiggly squiggly one and once he wakes up you can forget about him keeping still. We got the left ear tested before he woke up but had trouble once again getting him to settle long enough to test the right. We ended up doing a quick version of the test and he passed on both ears meaning he can hear from both but the numbers were a bit low on the right ear. We will have to wait till he is 9 months before we test again but I'm not very concerned. He certainly responds to our voices now and still startles at the least bit of sound.
I've been having fun dressing Calum up in his big boy clothes now that he is big enough to fit them. He sometimes goes through 3-4 outfits a day and with Don at work and the kids at school I am the only one who really gets to see them all. We also take a few walks during the week. I've learned to streamline the diaper bag depending on the length of the trip but once forgot his sucky so we only managed a short trip before we had to return.
I'll be back at work next month and I'm starting to see how much we have to do before then. Calum still doesn't like sleeping in his crib, napping without someone holding him, using a bottle except in case of emergency and being left out of anything you do. I've got to get him better able to cope without me so that poor Don doesn't have a really tough time of it. Calum and I spend almost 24 hours a day together now so it will be a big shock for him. I guess I'll have to start letting Don ease into looking after him for a few hours a day just so we can all make the adjustment. It will be hard to return to work so quickly but I also am starting to miss doing things outside of the house and having a short time to myself during the day. I barely have time to download my email these days - forget about reading it. It's funny because you'd think I have a lot of time during the day but my schedule is dictated by Calum and he doesn't like it when I'm on the computer.
Speaking of, I have Don watching him for awhile but want to get a few things done before he gets hungry again. For all you mothers out there, I hope you had a happy Mother's Day. We had a nice time at home with our family and Calum was extra sweet today.

A weekend of firsts
Calum had a weekend of firsts - his first big trip, his first time in Kamloops, his first stay in a hotel, his first visit to my parent's house, his first visit to Don's parent's house and now his first week without his sisters at home. First off, the weekend was pretty busy. Calum is a bit of a fussy traveller. Let's just put it simply - he likes to eat when he is hungry and travel cuts into feeding time. It took a great deal longer than usual to get to Kamloops but he was a pretty good boy most of the way [a few stinky diapers being the only real exception].
On Friday night we all stayed in a hotel in Kamloops. Calum got to meet Desiree and Dakota's relatives and even got some gifts from them. On Saturday, Don dropped Calum and I off at my parent's house in Merritt and he and the girls went to a wedding in Kamloops. Calum and I were off to a baby shower hosted by my mom and my sister. He got to meet a lot of the aunts and cousins. He also got very spoilt. The downside was he was a very hungry boy that day and spent a great deal of time eating rather than visiting.
On Sunday, Don and I had a bit more of a visit with my mom and nieces and then returned home, via a quick stop at Don's parent's place. It was a lucky thing we went there because just as we were pulling off the freeway, Calum got terribly hungry and cried like I've never seen him cry before. It was funny because I knew he couldn't be starving - he had eaten in Chilliwack. However, he wanted his milk so we quickly made our way to Newton and feed the little guy before he had a visit with his other grandparents. The picture that Don posted of him smiling seems to sum it all up. I think he was telling his grandma that he had a good trip and made off with a lot of great presents.
I've got a few photos of the baby shower that I will post soon. Must make my way through my email first.
