A busy weekend
Calum loves the outdoors. It's becoming a real challenge to get him in from outside. He's smart too, he knows how to trick me. When we come home from the Old DC, he walks up the walk then stops to show me something. It's usually a rock or a bug. When I stop to look at it, he starts motoring for the back yard. He's fast too. When we get back from running errands and get out of the car, he runs for his car (a battery operated quad - Thank you to Pam and Mickey) and insists on looking for sticks or bugs. Sometimes, I can get away with him just playing on the back deck but we always have to play a game where we draw bugs from his insect book then pretend the bugs are trying to catch us. Our neighbors must think we are nuts.
Dakota and I took Calum to the driving range for the first time this past weekend. He was fascinated with the concept but wanted to start throwing the golf balls onto the range rather than hitting them. He was pretty upset when we finished our buckets. Guess we actually better find a club his size though because it was pretty funny to see him try to use ours.
Desiree got a job. She'll be working at the Whitespot up the street from our house. Dakota still isn't on the work schedule for this week but I suspect with the nicer weather she'll be filling in for other people pretty soon. We've got some new pictures to post soon.
Hope you are all cheering for the Canucks tonight. Even the toddlers at the daycare are talking about it.

Morning meltdown

I made the mistake of agreeing to play Calum's favorite XBox game this morning, Star Wars Lego II. He loves the game, and I have to admit it's a lot of fun. However, when it was time to get ready for daycare he had a meltdown. He wanted to keep playing "Luke!" Then I tried to get him changed and he insisted he wanted to wear his very dirty Luke shirt. I had to frantically search for his other Luke shirt and convince him I'd wash his favorite before I could get him changed. Luckily, the mood didn't last long. As soon as I told him it was raining and we'd need his spidey boots and umbrella he was ready to go. Now, getting him into the daycare and away from the puddles was another matter.....toddlers really remind me of teenagers. Calum's certainly no meek little boy. He knows what he wants and he has me wrapped around his little finger.

More from the Old DC
I generally spend at least 30 minutes a day at the Old DC. Calum, and all his friends, like me to read them stories in the morning. They are each allowed to pick out a book for me to read, which is fine when there are 3 kids but some days there are 7 or 8. They all try to get me to read 2 or more books too. I don't really mind though, it's a great way to start the day and to meet all of the other kids.
They do some funny things though. One girl likes to do somersaults (she's not even 2 yet!), 2 boys like hockey and you have to make a big deal over their hockey jerseys, 1 little guy is quiet but likes to attach himself (limpet fashion) to your leg, 1 likes to jump (as does Calum) and they all spontaneously break out into the "Wheels on the Bus" song. Calum really likes a few of them and they greet each other as soon as they are in sight. He also likes the babies. At the end of the day, when there are just a few kids left, they usually have the infants and toddlers together as they do the end of day chores. Calum loves to show me the babies. He smiles and laughs as though to say "Aren't they strange".
Don, Calum and Dakota will be back soon. Don found another great Craigslist buy. A new zoom lens! Expect more pictures next week. Desiree is out at a Modest Mouse concert (no, that's not a kids concert) and I was finishing some work. Going to go enjoy the last few minutes of quiet before they all get back.
Hope you are all having a good start to your week.

Where do the days go?
Things have been busy. We've got some easter pictures to post but I haven't managed to download them yet. I'll post them next week. Calum has been doing great. He's really starting to talk and is a real character now. He certainly knows what he wants. Today, he was having fun imagining that he was fishing on a boat. The boat was his little tykes climber and his fishing rod was the broom. We've never been fishing with him so it was pretty neat to see that he is a natural.
After a bit too much attention from us all, he went off to our room today and closed the door. I, of course, opened it and told him he could play in the room but had to keep the door open. He said "OK. Bye". I tried to ask him what he was doing but he just kept saying "Bye." I left him alone for a few minutes then went to check on him. He was eating chocolate, lying on the floor and suddenly started saying "Luke!" Guess he was imagining he was part of the jedi order or something.
He's got quite a sense of humor too. Today he kept trying to get a reaction from me. He put on his shoes and told me he was going to the Old DC. I made a big deal out of it, begging him not to leave his poor mom, but he actually started heading for the door. Guess he was missing all of his friends today. Then he realized he'd get some attention if he had a cough. A few times he put on this pathetic little *cough* for Dakota and I. He may be getting a sore throat but I can tell you that cough was a fake. Funny boy.
Good news for Dakota. She spent her after-school hours doing some training last week at the new Smart Foods store. She's been wanting a job for awhile and is very happy she's now old enough to do things other than babysitting and paper routes. She's trained as a cashier and is currently on call.
Don, Desiree and I are busy too. I am finishing up most of my major projects and thought I might have some rare quiet time for awhile. However, it looks like there will be some wrap up work for the next quarter and more work for my Band. Also good news for me because it looks like I may be making a trip or two up to Merritt over the next few months.
If you haven't looked yet, go to Grandpa Bains blog http://www.radioado.blogspot.com/ to see new pictures of Coy. He's growing so fast.

You want what?
After a nice drive today we stopped at Dairy Queen for treats on the way home. Calum saw the freezer with all of the nice cakes and decided he wanted a cake, not a small treat. I guess he remembered his birthday cake and wanted more. Lucky for him, we all like them so on our way out we picked one up. Don't laugh, it's to celebrate the fact that it didn't rain today!
I've almost made it through the work crunch, just another week of year-end things to do and some reports and updates to finish. Once things are back on track blog posts will be a bit more regular.
Also, hope you all have heard the news by now. Don's Band, Lheidli T’enneh, voted no on their treaty ratification. Watch the news in the next few days as everyone has an opinion on what this means for the treaty process.

Better now
Calum's ear infection is gone and he was back at daycare. I saw them all out playing today and noticed Calum teaching Julia how to throw stuff. He seemed very enthusiastic about it and Julia joined right in. They were both waving their arms at each other and jumping up and down. I hope that they didn't hit any of the other kids.
Don got Calum the complete Spiderman DVD set (the old 1967 cartoons). He loves it but keeps wanting to change the DVDs. At least now we won't have to worry about getting up early enough to catch it on tv. Got to go pick him up from "the Old DC (daycare)". We call it the Old DC so he will look at it as a special club - only the lucky kids get to play there. He was very excited about going to the Old DC this morning so I hope he had a good day.

Murphy's Law
Don and I had a very busy Friday, juggling our schedules so that we could take Calum for a hearing test on Friday afternoon. We picked him up from daycare and were getting ready to go out for his appointment when I noticed his ear was draining fluid again. An ear infection! He had been very restless the night before and Don and I got very little sleep as we had to get up and watch cartoons with him. We thought it was a cold but we were wrong.
Luckily, since we were both home anyway we took him to the doctor and got in to see her in record time. I think we were in and out the door in 15 minutes. He's on medication for 10 days and it seems to be helping. He was up at 4:30 today, and I couldn't get him back to sleep till 7:00. It's thrown our whole day off but he seems happier now. All of the kids are off for the week - spring break. Desiree and Dakota are helping with Calum as the last two weeks are busy for both Don and I. Let's hope the rest of the week is a bit better.

Spiderman Gifts
On Monday, Larry and Tabitha dropped by with loads of gifts from the family. Calum was very excited when he saw them pull up in front of the house and he was doing a little dance when he saw them getting stuff out of the car. He noticed his Spiderman chair right away. He got lots of neat stuff and immediately set to work playing with it all. Thanks to Nanny and Papa, Bonnie, Clint, Jen, Nicola and of course Larry and Tabitha. I'll post some more pictures later.

Calum's 2nd Birthday
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to Calum
I can't believe you're 2!
We had a nice party yesterday at Grandma and Grandpa Bain's house. Coy, Grant and Jen were in town for the weekend so we all had a good visit and enjoyed the Spidey cake (combined for both Des and Calum). Uncle Grant helped Spidey climb the walls, Coy and Calum were measured on the wall, Buddy and Cedar were chased around the house and we all had pizza and cake. Calum wanted to blow out his candles twice so we all had to sing and cheer again. We let him open his presents yesterday (lots of Spiderman stuff) and had a tough time getting him settled down for bed.

Nan called early this morning and wished him a happy birthday then he was off and playing again. We went out for breakfast but Calum wanted to ride the escalators at the mall and visit the animals at the pet store instead. He was busy trying to blow up some balloons and playing with the boxes from his presents this afternoon and we finally got him down for a nap.
I'm sure Calum would agree that it was a very good birthday.

Update
I'm sure many of you have heard about Dakota's snowboarding accident. She went on a school trip to Whistler on Saturday and had a bad fall near the end of the day. We were all very worried about her as she was transported to Children's Hospital where they ran tests and monitored her for awhile. She was kept immobilized till they were sure there was no damage to her back or spine. We are very happy to report she was released from the hospital on Monday night and though she has some stiffness and pain, she'll be fine. She's back at school now and seems to be doing great. She'll have a follow up visit in a few weeks.
Grandpa Bain has suggested she take up a less adventurous past time - something like shopping. I'm trying to think of some way to convince her that helmets and safety gear are really the in thing this year - all of the radtabulous (her word) kids are wearing them.

Bye Mom
Lately Calum has been great when I drop him off at daycare in the mornings. If his good friend (formerly his fighting buddy) Kiernan is there, he runs in and they start playing right away. If he's not there, Calum will help me fill out the intake form then ease into an activity. As soon as he gets involved in it, he will turn to me and say "Bye mom". I can be in the middle of a conversation with the staff but Calum will keep telling me "Bye" till I go.
Sniff, sniff. I'm so happy my baby is growing up. Really. Can't wait for the eye rolling "Mom, don't embarrass me" phase that I am sure is just around the corner.
Can you believe there is snow outside again? When I showed Calum the snow this morning, he looked out the window and said in a very accusing-type of tone "Snow!" then proceeded to tell me where the snow ought not to be - on the cars, on the lawn, on the sidewalk. Nasty snow. Mostly I think he wants to wear his new Spiderman shoes and doesn't like it when it snows because I make him wear his boots.

More Spidey Gear
Calum is a very lucky boy, both sets of grandparents gave him Spiderman gifts this week. He loves everything and is running around the house dressed from top to bottom as Spidey shooting webs and spraying us with water. We found the old cartoons on Youtube too so he now thinks only Dad's laptop plays Spiderman cartoons. I'm just happy because there are a few we haven't seen yet so it's something different to watch.
Thanks to the grandparents and to Larry and Tabitha for delivering the gifts from Merritt. Calum is working on his on thank you notes and we will get them to you as soon as he finishes.

Star Wars
Calum is mesmerized by Star Wars. We watched Empire Strikes Back last night to see if he would take to it. He did. I'm beginning to think that we should have named him Don Jr (Jr.)

A Flair for the Dramatic
Calum has a dramatic flair not seen since Desiree and Dakota were little (I'm guessing here but I really think this comes from their Dad). Last night I said something , can't remember what it was but it must have been "No", which upset him. He cried his big tears, his lips trembled, and when that didn't work he walked over to the tissue box and grabbed one to dab the tears from his eyes and to wipe his nose. He really made a point of making sure we saw him do it too. I think there may have even been a sniffle or two involved.
This kid never forgets anything either. I told him his spidey pjs were dirty and needed to be washed in an effort to get him out of them and changed for daycare yesterday. He seemed to agree and I got him changed into his non-spidey clothes and off to daycare. As soon as we got home yesterday afternoon, he was asking to go downstairs. I thought he wanted to play on my computer or with the toys in our office but he went to the dryer and tried to open it looking for his spideys. Now, bad mommy that I am, I had only started a load just before going out to get him so they were still in the wash. Luckily, thanks to Nanny and Papa, he has a second set and we rushed upstairs to get him changed. I tried to put this off, asking him if he wanted to go to the video store. He said "Yep" but insisted on wearing his pjs again, all the way to the video store. At the video store he remembered exactly where the Spiderman cartoon was in the kids section and insisted on renting it (again).
Toddlers sure are a lot of fun - they can drive you crazy and make you laugh at the same time.
Look for some new pictures later in the week.

Now it's Elmo and "The Guys"
Calum's latest thing is he has to be wearing an "Elmo" pamper. They all have pictures on them - Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Ernie and Bert, etc. but apparently only Elmo will do for our boy. I'm running out of ways to trick him because only about 1/6 of each bag has an Elmo picture on it. Tonight he saw through me and immediately went looking for the right pamper and asked for me to change him again.
His other love at the moment is "The Guys". "The Guys" are those Little People and animals that come with toys like his barnyard, etc. They are also any small plastic figure like Dora and Boots (the most special of all the guys). They have a bin full of them at daycare and all the kids love them. Calum will take my hand and put one of the guys in it to get me to play with him. He likes to pretend he is an astronaut or to have them jump or shoot Spidey webs. Today, after I picked him up from daycare, he was very anxious to get home to play with the guys. Desiree had cleaned up all of his toys and he was looking all over for them. Sometimes they get carried around in a little Dora back pack that Nanny gave him. Sometimes they all ride in a truck after lining up in a row waiting for him to pick them up.
Sometimes he reminds me so much of my brother when he was younger. I'm waiting for him to hit the sand box stage or the water gun stage. He already likes to chase us around with the plant spray bottle. I guess he won't have a Finigan or a Dukes of Hazzard car but he does sometimes want to cuddle with his teddy bears and play with his match box cars. Maybe it's a boy thing.
He is starting to ask a lot more for Dad. This morning he wanted Don to come with us to the daycare. I apparently am not as much fun at bath time because he wants Dad to do that too. Tonight Dad kept him entertained by playing with the guys, playing cars and shooting spidey webs at each other. He still wanted me to read him books though.
It will be a busy day tomorrow so I'm off to bed. Hope you are all having a good week.

He's got it...almost
Yesterday, as I was filling in the daily intake form at the daycare, Calum did something both cute and mean. Julia, a little girl on the toddler side, got a little too close for his liking. He told her "No!". He told her "Stop!". She didn't move so he shot webs at her "Peww, peww". Unfortunately Julia doesn't speak Spidey and she didn't move so Calum gave her a big push and made her cry. That got her to move but it also got Calum in trouble. Our Spidey has got to learn not to be a bully.
I am very, very pleased because Calum now loves the Harry Potter movies. He likes the owls, the house elf, the magic car and even laughs at Harry and Ron. I think he even likes the quidditch games. Now that is a true sign he is my son! He just saw it on tv one day and went over to the DVD shelf and pulled all the Harry Potter movies and asked me to put one on. He's smart and observant.
Everyone is mostly over our colds, finally. I realize just how bad Calum felt when I see how different he is. Last night was the first night he danced for weeks. When the boy doesn't dance you know he's not feeling well.
No other news, I'm busy as I have taken on extra work till the end of March. Don's busy as always. Desiree is starting to think about course selection for next year, grade 12, and thinking about college or university. Dakota volunteered at the school science fair and is planning on joining basketball next year. She attends most of her friends games.
Have a good weekend everyone.

Lookout, here comes Spiderman
We've been trying to teach Calum how to pretend to shoot webs from his hands like Spiderman because the shape of the hand is almost like the ASL sign for "I love you". He's really taken to it and goes around saying "Peww....peww" as he slings his web. Yesterday, one of the day care workers from the infant side spent some time around him and the first question she asked me when I went to pick him up was "What is he doing?" Calum helped explain by pointing to his Spiderman socks and saying "Spidey". What a funny boy.
I swear he also wrote the letter "e" last night too. Unfortunately, he's inherited our inability to spell as the "e" was for "Dakota". He has one of those little magnetic sketch boards and he wants you to tell him what to draw. You say, "draw dad" and he replies "yep" and makes a little scribble for dad. He will fill the board up and can point out each one to you if you ask things like "where's dad" or "show me Bazooka" (an excellent memory). He also has sounds he uses for letters "e i o" and draws those too.
One of his favorite things right now is his sticker book that he got for Christmas from Aunty Bonnie. He loves to put the stickers in the right place and is pretty good at recognizing where things ought to go. They play with small stickers at day care so his dexterity is pretty good and he can line the stickers up very well. By the time he hits kindergarten he may be ready to help teach it.
We've been working on expanding his vocabulary. Instead of him saying "Banana" we encourage him to say "Banana please" or "I want a banana". Last night he even signed the ASL sign for "please" while asking "Banana please". It's amazing how much they learn at this age.
Happy birthday Bonnie (Feb 14th). Better post while we remember.

Calum is
- the sort of boy who will turn the house upside down in 5 minutes but wipe away a spot on the floor while saying "Mess!"
- a boy who loves to chase us all around the house with a water spray bottle but is equally as happy turning the water on himself
- a boy who likes to say "hello" and "goodbye" to almost everyone, except for his mom. He and I should never be more than a few feet apart
- a boy who likes to chase those "nasty birds" away from the yard, then asks where they've all gone
- the sort of boy who eats his grapes one at a time - one for Calum, one for mom, one for Calum, one for mom.......because he doesn't mind sharing a good thing (except with his sisters)
- a boy who begins asking for his sister as soon as he leaves daycare and isn't happy till he gets home and finds them there
- a boy who can be convinced to do almost nothing unless he wants to do it (including getting changed out of his Spiderman pjs)
but all things considered, he keeps things interesting. He's back at daycare this morning, let's hope he lasts the day. I've got a lot of work to catch up on so I'm off to open the dreaded email inbox.

a quick update
Calum came home early today.....very early. He was at daycare for almost 2 hours but just wasn't feeling up to it. He was in good spirits in the morning but the nasty cough, sniffles and runny nose won't leave him alone. Dakota, who was on the mend, also came home for a block to get some more rest. The rest of us are still coughing and sniffling. My fever comes and goes and the constant coughing just makes things worse. It gives me some appreciation for what asthma suffers put up with - only they can't breath on top of not being able to stop coughing or the itchy throat.
We went to a retirement party for Grandpa Bain on the weekend. Well, Don and the girls went, Calum and I made several small appearances between walks around the parking lot, trips to the dollar store for bubble supplies, a quick stop at McDonald's for a snack and milkies in the car. This was all done while Calum was wearing his Spiderman PJs under his coat. He wore them all weekend till we could convince him they were yucky and in need of a bath (PS Mom and Dad, thanks for the new spidey gear. It will all get much use!)
Des and Dakota went to the Monster Truck event with Larry, Tabitha and Jen. Calum and I were sleeping when they got home so I'm not sure how it all went this year. We got to say a quick hello to Jen before they left but will have to have a proper visit the next time we go up to Merritt.

Our little hockey fan
The girls were pretty worn out so we took Calum with us to the hockey game. He had fun. He got to see Fin (he waved at us as he was passing), watch the Orca blimp (very upset he didn't come close enough) and tried on some puck hats (he thought they were very funny). Oh, and he watched a bit of hockey. Mostly, he liked the intermission and anytime people clapped. We'll post pics later. Lucky boy, his first time to a hockey game and he gets to sit in a suite with grandma and grandpa, uncle rob, mom, dad and a room full of friendly faces. We walked by the concession people so often he made some friends there too and they were offering us free food. Calum had to wave goodbye to everyone on our last trip around the concourse and a lucky few got kisses blown their way.

...still with the colds
Everyone was hit this weekend. Calum did stay home on Friday and slept till 10am. Dakota (off for a Pro-D Day) watched him most of the day for me and was busy taking care of Des too. Don and I got sick by Friday night and Dakota got sick on Saturday. We are all doing well - sore throats, coughs, sniffles and much complaining about aches and pains but everyone is bundled up and resting for the week ahead. We (Don and I) are supposed to be going to the hockey game tonight. Don's work has a suite for the game so we've been looking forward to it. Now, we'll have to see how the kids are doing in an hour or so. Calum's been napping for about an hour and a half and should be up soon. Oh...little feet are running about so I've got to go.

Colds again
Now that the warmer weather is here everyone is getting sick again. Calum and Des have colds. I may have to keep Calum home today - he woke up at 4:30 but just fell back asleep. I'm going to let him nap for awhile and see how he is doing. Yesterday there were so few of them at daycare that they were able to go on a long walk to the library - about a 20 minute walk. Apparently Calum got to ride in the wagon most of the way and had a lot of fun.
Don and I are busy looking for a Spiderman shirt for Calum. We've found socks, and he loves them, but have not had luck with the shirt yet. Maybe a trip to the mall this weekend.
Well, things are busy at work again (another new project) so I'd better get some work in while I can. Have a good weekend.

Books with Dakota
Last night Dakota read Calum a book before bed. He liked it so much he cried for about a half hour till she came back and read him two more. He was still reluctant to go to sleep but we did get him down for the night. Dakota must be the favored one because immediately after we left daycare he was asking for her and he called out for her as soon as we got in the door.
Happy Birthday Tabitha
I couldn't log in to post last night but yesterday was Tabitha's birthday. Hope you had a happy birthday Tabs!

Spiderman
Calum has wanted to wear his Spidey pjs for 5 nights in a row. Spiderman is his latest thing....he likes the movies and the cartoons.
He's been a real character today. This morning, I was letting him pick out his socks. He couldn't decide between two pairs so I put one of the pairs on him. He quickly set it right, taking off one sock and putting on one from the other pair. He is now wearing different color socks. He also has been going around with his hat on backwards, to look like Dad.

More Birthday Wishes
Happy soon-to-be birthday to our niece Nicola and our brother-in-law Clint. We've heard Nic had her party already and got loads of presents. Maybe she'll share them with her dad.
Love from all of us. Look for presents to be arriving soon via snail mail. OK, I'm sending them today...will be a bit late.

Congratulations
Two couples we know recently got new additions. Congratulations! Don's friend has a baby girl and my friend has a baby boy. Unfortunately, they all live quite far away so we'll have to admire them from afar.
My Bunny!
When I picked Calum up from daycare yesterday he was fine till we were signing out and he saw a bunny that looked exactly like the one he has at home. He was sure it was his bunny and wanted to take it. I struggled to get him out of the room, dressed and across the street. He was crying the whole time. It didn't help that I had let him take a DVD case with him in the morning and when he saw it in his cubby and tried to open it he discovered the DVD wasn't inside. He was sure that it was at daycare too. I got him home and undressed while he was trying to get redressed and kept pointing at the daycare. I had to scramble to find his bunny (in the bottom of toy box No. 3) and the DVD (of the coffee table, luckily). As soon as he was sure they were safe, all was well. Bunny got a lot of attention last night. He had ice cream, played XBox, was chased around the house and escorted on Calum's car....he was even offered milkies and given the best seat on the new sofa. I think I'll take Bunny over with me today when I pick him up to make sure we don't have a repeat.

No!
I don't know why, but for some reason Calum has liked to start the morning off with a resounding "NO!" I guess he's just trying to catch up for all of the time he's been told no.
It's cold here today and we have plans for doing some shopping. Our phones don't work - the cordless ones - after the power went out last week. Time for some upgrades, I suppose. We are also going to start looking for some new furniture. This trip will take us through Stanley Park on the way to Park Royal mall. Maybe we'll try to get some pictures.

Expanding vocabulary
I was trying to estimate how many words Calum can say and it's impossible because it grows everyday. He's really picking things up He has some flash cards with pictures on them and not only does he know the names of things but he knows a lot of ASL signs for them too. He's also starting to put sentences together and it always surprises me when he does. I was also thinking that a lot of the things he says you'd only expect to hear so often from an active boy. Things like, "Oh, oh. A mess!" when he spills his milk on the floor. He also likes "NO, mine" and "You stop!", "You bad" or just "Ewww" when he sees something he doesn't like.
In other news, we have been having quite a hard time getting him back into his morning routine. Everything is fine till I have to get him ready to leave for daycare. He struggles out of his jacket, boots and hat and I have to hold him down to dress him. Then he cries all the way (we are just across the street from the daycare) and makes a real fuss when we get inside. He holds on tight while I fill out the intake form and tries to make a run for the door if the gate is open. Funny enough, the staff told me that he settles in very well minutes after I leave. The stinker! I go home feeling horrible about leaving him at daycare while he runs around having fun. I guess it's an adjustment for us all.
Back to work now. Hope you are all keeping warm.

Back to work, school and daycare
Yesterday everyone reluctantly returned to work, school or daycare. Calum was a bit upset. We got half way between the house and the daycare and he was pointing back home trying to get me to turn around. When we got there he tried to get me to keep his jacket on and his crying announced our return for all of the staff. It will probably take him the week to get used to it all again.
Desiree and Dakota are also back at school. Desiree is finished with her jobs so it's nice having her home again. They had a busy break - visiting family in Kamloops and Merritt. They even got to meet their newest cousin, Grace. We've only seen pictures but hear that she is pretty cute.
It was great to see our families over the break. Calum still talks about mom and dad's puppy, Oreo. Next time we go up let's hope it's considerably warmer.
Hope you all have a good start to the year.
